I first would like to thank all of you for continueing the Viking X-C tradition. I came across this site while finding some road races around huntington during the 4th of July weekend while I'm home on leave. I was on the 1987-89 Viking X-C teams that turned out to be very successful with a group of guys that everyone said couldn't run down the dream. I wanted to say congrats to this years Viking team on a job well done and happy hunting down the road. I'll be running the Body Zone Fitness 5k on the 4th, so maybe I'll see you there.

David James, a living legend. Fill us fellow old-timers in on what you have been upto. Last I knew, you worked for EcoLabs or something like that. Military now?
Did you run with Mike Gage? I'm not sure if you over lapped with him or not.

Yea, I'm in the Army stationed in Washington D.C. I hate the traffic here, no comparison to huntington or even fort wayne. I joined the Army in 96 and recently got back from a beach trip to Baghdad, Iraq in late 06. There wasn't much running over there except from mortar fire. The cool thing here is the running scene, they have tons of 5k/10ks. I did run with gage in 88, haven't heard from him in years. I do stay in contact with Eutsler, I see him about 3-4 times a year when I come back to the area. He might be at the race on the 4th. Are you guys running on the 4th?

I've only heard that Eutsler has a bar and grill up in Columbia City. Is that true? I've been meaning to stop in and check. I've been asked to run the Zoo run with my soon-to-be father-in-law, but I'm not sure I'm in shape to do that. But I'd consider the Bodyzone in Huntington if I know people will be there.

Eutsler sold the bar last year. I ran in the zoo 4 miler last year but with the gas prices and driving from warren, i'll be running in huntington for this one.

I do give the David James story a lot... as told to me by Coach Lakes. I also give the Mike Gage AND the Bing Simmers (what not to do during xc season) as told to me by Coach Lakes.
Dave you probably don't remember me but I was a 9th/10th grade at HNHS when you were running at HC... I talked to you and Eustler a few times... Scher too (when he was around).

Yea I remember. I'm glad to see a former viking runner coaching the team. That makes the young kids remember and continueing the tradition. Gage and simmers were two of a pair, the stories I have! Have you heard from Coach Lakes/Gross? It has been ages.

I just spoke to Coach Grose the other morning at the gas station. He just retired from teaching this past year. He is still living in Roanoke.
I saw Coach Lakes at Sectional this year. He came to watch and I had a chance to talk to him for a little bit. He is doing well. He still lives out by the old orchard.
I might be going to Chicago over the 4th but if I do not I plan on running the Bodyzone 5k. How often are you running road races now?

I took the winter off and just started up again. I ran a 10K last weekend and plan to run a 5K tomorrow. My times have slipped greatly in the past couple of years. I'm trying to get back to a more preferred time. I'm running in the Army 10 miler in OCT, that one going to hurt. If you have coach Lakes phone number, I would love to have it.

Thanks for the phone number. I see the race went pretty good, was if hot. This race in the past has been pretty humid. Hopefully I'll see you guys at the 5K on the 4th.
