Former School Board member Thomas R. King is the new District Five representative on the HCCSC School Board.
Board members met in special session yesterday evening to elect one of the three candidates they interviewed last Monday.
King received four of six votes, the exact number needed to win. Candidate Cynthia Cormany received two votes and Jesse Brown received zero.
King did not attend the meeting, so Superintendent Tracey Shafer informed him of the Board's decision via telephone after the meeting.
“We will take [King] through an abbreviated orientation process [this week] so he has some background on ... things going on in the corporation,” Shafer explained.
King will be sworn in at Monday's meeting and begin serving immediately afterward.
School Board President Kevin Patrick was grateful for the candidates who stepped forward to serve the kids of Huntington County.
“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank all three [candidates] for your willingness to serve for your time and your commitment to the process,” Patrick said. “Unfortunately only one ... [could] be selected. I hope ... the two ... that are not selected ... continue to be involved in your kids' education and the election process that will occur in 2010.”
Board member Rick Brubaker agreed.
“I think that we had three very good candidates for this and I don't think there would have been a wrong choice,” Brubaker said. “We're glad that you guys made the effort to come out and do this.”

Note: Tom King is the long time coach of the HU track and field program. King was narrowly defeated in his re-election in which ended in a tie that was broken by the school board itself.
