Its been a long cold winter so far, so it got me to thinking. Huntington has a lot of advantages like:
HNHS indoor and outdoor track HU Indoor track and pending outdoor track HU's cross country course Roush Lake the hill through the middle of the city quiet streets Salamonie Res.
You get the point.
But my question is? Other than altitude and warm weather. What else does Huntington need? And more importantly. What can we do, or the city do, to make Huntington a better running environment, or community?
Do we need more trails, a youth track team, a road running club, a greenway, a major race to create training groups around, do we need more publicity.
Lets hear your ideas.

those all sound really nice but i would say a road running club and a youth track team sound the best. there is not much in huntington to get elementary and middle school kids interested in running. it seems like the football team is starting to recruit kids at age 6.

I agree with Doughty, we need to get more youth involved and hooked on the sport. An established adult running club (with regular meeting times) would also help to set a positive example for the youth. A couple of open 50 cent track meets during the summer would also be nice, where each event costs only 50 cents to compete in.

That sounds like a very good idea, maybe one of these a month. I wouldn't mind jumping into a couple myself during the summer, it sounds fun. There is not a lot of opportunities in Huntington for runners that aren't on a team to run a max mile on a track with competition. I bet it would attract some adults.

hnhsxc has talked about doing an open mile in the summer for all-comers. You should try and get him to do it.
Does anyone know if the AAU track team is still going?

Well today in practice we had our guys who aren't running at the meet tomorrow run a max mile...and the rest of our team got pretty into it. We had a guy working the lap counter and ringing the bell for the final lap, we had two guys holding a long strip of toilet paper at the finish, a guy with a stopwatch, and the day before me and Graham went and bought Hines a cap gun to start the race. Oh and I got a ruler and measured out 9.34 meters to make it a true mile and we had another guy at the 200 mark yelling splits. I am thinking if we get guys to volunteer enough this summer, the MIB could make some pretty good money by holding an open max mile.
