LETTER: Keep the pool
This is why Huntington University should not fill in its pool: We need to utilize this pool for the local swim teams and adult lap needs for our community to swim in. Huntington needs pool space. Pool space is drastically needed for competitive swimmers. Huntington University could use the pool space more effectively by building men's and women's locker rooms so they can use the pool during basketball games.
Being a former coach and having been Indiana state champion, an AAU champion, an age 13-14 200-yard backstroke record holder and now a parent, I see the needs of swimmers. This is one of the best pools in the state of Indiana and can compete with any other pool in the state. I am amazed to see that they took the three-meter diving board out with a 13-foot depth. No doubt due to insurance cost.
This pool is still in immaculate condition. I don't understand why Huntington University would fill it in when pool space is needed so much. Smaller communities - Garret, Auburn, Bluffton - have outdoor pools that maintain cost. This pool can be used year-around.
Take the cost of filling in the pool and use that money to maintain it. Ruth and Orville Merillat donated a pool, not another gym. This is one of Indiana's finest swimming pools. The cost could be brought down by using solar. Have your engineering department look in to it, or our high school students. HNHS could sure use the pool.
Here's our chance to have a pool. Athletic directors, help all our swimmers have the best.
